Princeton, N.J. - Senior Gretchen Anderson scored a hat trick to help propel the Princeton women's hockey team to a 4-2 win against No. 6 Providence Sunday afternoon at Baker Rink. The Tigers took a 2-1 lead after a spirited first period and never looked back as they improve to 4-2-0 this season.
The 10th-ranked Tigers came out of the gates flying and dominated play in the first period, outshooting the Friars 15-5. Midway through the frame, with Tiger freshman Liz Keady serving a holding the stick penalty, sophomore Heather Jackson took advantage of a Friar miscue and found herself all alone in front of PC goaltender Jana Bugden. Jackson took one shot that Bugden stopped but Jackson was able to hammer in the rebound to make it 1-0 on her second goal of the season. The unassisted tally was also her second shorthanded goal of the year. Princeton continued to control play, but roughly six minutes later it was Providence that evened the score up at 1-1 when Kelli Halcisak snuck in from the right point and roofed a shot that Princeton goaltender Megan Van Beusekom was only able to get part of before it went into the net. Ashley Payton and Hilary Graves drew assists.
The tie however was shortlived as Princeton answered back 2:28 later on the power play. Senior Angela Gooldy corralled the puck on the blue line and sent a slap shot on the Friar net. Bugden made the initial save but could control the rebound. Jackson then took a swipe at it but it bounced off a Providence defender right to Anderson, who fired it into the open Friar net.
Anderson made it two goals for the day early in the second period, when she followed up her own shot as she drove to the net. Jackson fed her a pass in the neutral zone and Anderson skated in along the left boards. At the face-off circle she cut in on net and fired a shot that Bugden stopped, but as the Princeton forwards and Providence defensemen came to the crease, the puck came loose and Andersons stuffed it under an outstretched Bugden. Junior Katharine Maglione also notched an assist.
Anderson completed the hat trick at 12:09 of the third period with her eighth goal of the season while her team was shorthanded. With Maglione serving a checking penalty, Anderson picked up the puck in the neutral zone and skated in on Bugden 1-on-4. It did not matter because just when she reached the slot, she wristed a shot that beat the PC goalie just above her right pad.
Providence added a goal 42 seconds later but it wasn't enough as the Tigers earned their fourth win of 2003-04.
Van Beusekom made 20 saves to earn her third win of the season and is now 3-2-0. Bugden absorbed the loss and is 2-3-2 on the year.
The Tigers return to action next Friday night at No. 2 Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
