Newark, Del. - Twelve unanswered goals fueled a dormant Princeton offense and a season-high goal output resulted in a 17-9 win at Delaware on Tuesday night. The Tigers rallied from an early first-half deficit and put the game away early in the second period by closing out a 29-minute offensive barrage that gave Princeton a commanding 13-5 advantage.
After an emotional 13-11 overtime win against Georgetown last Friday night, the Tigers needed some time to get back into the flow of things at Delaware. For those counting, it took 13:54 to be exact. Princeton rallied with a furious offensive attack and erased a four-goal deficit in only four minutes. The Tigers scored seven unanswered to close out the half and led 8-5 after 30 minutes.
Down 5-1, sophomore Lindsey Biles ignited the offense with her seventh goal of the season, taking a pass from senior Sarah Small from behind the net at 13:54. Sophomore Leigh Slonaker, who started her second consecutive game for Princeton, pulled the Tigers within two with her first goal of the night. Eighteen second later, junior Katie Yakulis reached the scoring column for Princeton and although it trailed by one, all the momentum was with the Orange and Black. Junior Liza Hillenbrand tied up the score off a nice inside feed from sophomore Elizabeth Pillion and the Tigers were just warming up. Junior Theresa Sherry scored two of the next three Princeton goals and after 30 minutes played, the Tigers led 8-5.
The second half tempo was set by Pillion and senior Whitney Miller, who scored her first goal of the night 2:55 into the period. Pillion would make it 10-5 and Miller made it 11-5 at 40:36. Pillion won the ensuing draw, raced downfield and fired her second goal of the night at 40:46.
Sherry upped her team-lead in goals with three on the night and now has 21 on the season. Miller scored all three of her goals in the second half while Pillion, who had two assists in the first half, had three goals in the second period. It was Slonaker, however, who led the Tigers with four goals, matching her season total in one night.
Nikki Kucharski scored three goals while Erin Edell and Laura Libertini each scored two goals for Delaware. Shannon Kron, who entered with 11 goals on the season, was held scoreless by senior Rachael Becker, who marked her the entire game.
Princeton has now won four straight and improves to 5-3 overall. The Tigers head to Ithaca, N.Y. for an Ivy League showdown with Cornell on Friday night. Princeton is 1-0 in conference play and Cornell is 6-0 on the year. Friday night's game is slated for a 7 p.m. draw.
