New Haven, Conn. - Princeton won the statistical battle, but could not overcome a three-goal second-half deficit and fell by a 7-6 score at Yale on Saturday afternoon. Six different Tigers scored goals as Princeton dropped its first Ivy contest in over a year.
The Tigers scored first when Lindsey Biles notched her 10th goal of the season 2:02 into the game, taking a pass from Sarah Small in stride and slipping the ball past Yale goalkeeper Amanda Laws. The Bulldogs responded with two straight points to grab their first lead of the game.
Biles found Alex Fiore streaking in front of the cage at 10:52 and Fiore tied up the score with a quick shot of her own. Yale scored the next three and led 5-2 before Leigh Slonaker's goal cut the lead to two points at the half. Theresa Sherry brought the Tigers within one goal only 50 seconds into the second period; however, back-to-back Yale goals extended the Bulldog lead to three for the second time of the afternoon.
Princeton got back within one goal with scores from Elizabeth Pillion and Tara Hardiman, but could not get the equalizer despite outshooting the Elis 25-18. The Tigers finished with 36 ground balls compared to Yale's 22, but Laws was the difference with nine saves on the day, including two in the last minute.
The Tigers fall to 7-4 on the year and 2-1 in the Ivy League while Yale improves to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Princeton returns home next Saturday for an Ivy matchup with Harvard.
