Finley's Two Homers Help Sofball Sweep Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Melissa Finley hit 3 for 4 with a homer in Game 1 and pitched a no-walk, complete game shutout in Game 2 to lead Princeton past Yale, 5-1 and 2-0, in an Ivy League doubleheader at Dewitt Field.
Princeton took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first game before Yale got on the board in the third. Kristin Lueke and Kristin Del Calvo both walked, Finley singled over second base, and freshman pitcher Erin Snyder brought the trio home with a double down the right field line.
Snyder walked no batters and struck out seven to hold the Bulldogs scoreless, except for a one-run double in the third by Laura Beckert. Catcher Kristy Kwiatkowski, who got on with a double to left field, scored the lone run for Yale. Finley brought home two more runs when she singled in the fifth to score Del Calvo, who reached on an error, and then in the seventh when she smacked a homer deep out of left field. Snyder allowed no hits or runs in the bottom of the seventh and the Tigers ended the first game with a decisive 5-1 win. Yale's Ashley Linnenbank struck out no Princeton batters.
The name of the second game was defense, as neither team got more than six hits in the seven innings. Finley allowed no walks or runs and struck out two batters while Yale pitcher Beth Pavlicek pitched a five-hitter with four strikeouts.
After two scoreless innings, Lueke singled with a slapper to left field and Finley's second homer of the day, another hit out of left field, scored the only two runs of the game. Lueke batted 2 for 3 while catcher Ty Ries, Erickson, and Finley each went 1 for 2.
Finley, a two-time Ivy League Player of the Week, finished the day at 4 for 6 with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs. She now has seven home runs and a .409 batting average this season.
Princeton (13-10-1) travels to Brown tomorrow, Monday, April 14 for a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. The game was rescheduled from Saturday due to rain.
