Villanova, Pa. - Lindsey Biles scored four goals while Elizabeth Pillion and Leigh Slonaker each added three apiece to lift Princeton past Pennsylvania 13-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. The Tigers built an early cushion and maintained the lead throughout with 25 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers pacing the defense.
Mary Beth Hogan scored off a feed from Sarah Small only 2:06 into the game, Pillion scored 2:06 later and Biles scored at 6:21 to give the Tigers an early 3-0 lead. They would keep at least a two-goal margin the rest of the way out. Three unanswered Princeton goals had the Tigers up 8-3 with 5:30 left in the first half. Penn scored twice to close out the period and Princeton owned a three-goal cushion at the break. Alex Fiore would make that a four-goal cushion with an athletic up-and-under move and a bounce shot past a surprised Quaker goalkeeper.
"This was a really good game for us," says Princeton coach Chris Sailer. "We shot well and we had a lot of hustle."
Biles fourth goal of the game doubled up Penn 10-5. The two teams exchanged goals the rest of the way out, resulting in Princeton's five-goal win. Fiore finished the game with two assists and a team-high eight ground balls. Both Fiore and senior Rachael Becker registered four caused turnovers. Becker added five ground balls as did Mary Beth Hogan. Tara Hardiman and Hogan each chipped in with one goal for the Tigers.
"It felt so good to finally hit the cage," says Biles, who matched her season-high goal total. "We needed this win to get some momentum heading into a crucial game this Saturday."
The Tigers now set their sights on Dartmouth, who currently stands one game ahead of them in the conference standings. Princeton is 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the Ivy League. Penn drops to 6-9, 2-4 Ivy and is eliminated from Ivy contention. The Tigers and Big Green draw at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 in Hanover, N.H.
