Princeton, N.J. - They meet again. Princeton and LeMoyne meet in a rematch of last season's first-round NCAA tournament game. The Tigers came away with the largest defeat in NCAA tournament history last season, winning 25-3 en route to the 2002 women's lacrosse national championship.
The Tigers are set to defend their crown with a new corps of stars. Junior Theresa Sherry finished the regular season with a team-high 34 goals and 38 points, but senior Whitney Miller was close behind with 26 goals and 37 points. Three sophomores notched 20 or more goals for the Tigers. They are Lindsey Biles (24), Elizabeth Pillion (24) and Leigh Slonaker (21).
All-America Rachael Becker, who led the Ivy League in caused turnovers with 48 this season, leads the Princeton defense into the postseason. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Kolodner brings a 4-0 NCAA tournament record and a 30-4 overall record into the playoffs. Princeton is 9-0 all-time in first-round NCAA tournament games and has had three first-round byes in their previous 12 tournament appearances. The Tigers look to become on only the second team to ever successfully defend the national title and only the second program to win three or more national championships.
Last season's first-round game with LeMoyne set NCAA records for most goals scored by one team in a tournament game (25) and largest margin of victory (22) in a playoff contest.
Should Princeton defeat LeMoyne, it would face the winner of the Ohio State versus Duke contest. The Blue Devils are the No. 4 seed and would host a second-round game. Should both Princeton and Ohio State win, the second-round match-up would take place at Class of 1952 Stadium on Sunday, May 11.
Thursday's game is a 3 p.m. start. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students with I.D. and youth under 14 years of age.
