MILAN - Painters go to Florence to learn from the greats. Jazz musicians journey to New Orleans. Soccer players go to San Siro Stadium in Milan, home of the fabled Italian clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan.
If you are a soccer fan or player, there are few better places to experience the sport than where the Princeton men's soccer team is right now. On Sunday, August 16th, the 2003 team held its first training session in its temporary home of Tabiano Terme, surrounded by medieval castles and rolling hills. The Tigers later traveled to San Siro to watch Juventus defeat AC Milan, 2-0.
Princeton then prepared for its first match against Parma's professional Under-21 team, but not before taking in the many sights of Florence. The team split time among Michaelangelo's David, Caravaggio's Medusa and the local merchants at the Ponte Vecchio. Inspired by the sights and sounds of the enchanting city and a quick visit to the Italian National team's training center, the Tigers entered their first game of their tour.
Facing a team with a long and storied tradition of soccer excellence, the Tigers fell to Parma, 3-0 but experienced the pace and quality that makes Italy a soccer fanatic's dream come true. The Tigers next face another Italian powerhouse, Hellas Verona at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 21.
