Berkeley, Calif. - Princeton entered the national Top 25 in women's soccer last week and acted like a team that wanted to stay for next week.
The 25th-ranked Tigers put up their most impressive performance of the season, tying 10th-ranked California 1-1 as temperatures at Edwards Stadium threatened the 100-degree mark.
The tie kept both teams undefeated, as Princeton is now 4-0-1 and Cal is now 3-0-3. The Tigers, who opened their trip west with a 3-1 win over Sacramento State Friday night, returned home on the red-eye after the game in time for Monday classes.
"It was a great game for us," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "It was a great opportunity for us to show that we could compete with one of the best teams in the country."
Princeton's goal came 39 seconds into the second half, when Esmeralda Negron took a pass from Emily Behncke on the right side and reversed the ball into the upper left corner of the net. Negron now has one goal in each of the five games this season, while Behncke completed a five-point weekend after having two goals against Sacramento State. "It was a great shot," Shackford said. "It was a good play all around. Es did a great job converting."
Cal picked up the equalizer in the 60th minute when Kimberly Yokers converted a penalty kick after being fouled in the box.
Cal would outshot Princeton 21-13 for the game and 6-2 in the overtimes. The best chance of the overtime came on a shot by Maura Gallagher in the final minute.
Emily Vogelzang, playing the second half and the overtimes, made six saves for the Tigers.
Princeton hosts Hartford Wednesday night before opening the Ivy League schedule in Princeton Stadium Saturday night against Yale.
Princeton (4-0-1) 0 1 0 0 -- 1
