Final Stats
Esmeralda Negron kept one streak alive and Liz Bell ended another. As a result, Princeton's quest for a fourth-straight Ivy League women's soccer championship got off to a strong start.
Negron and Bell each had a goal and assist as No. 20 Princeton defeated Yale 4-2 in the Ivy opener for both on a rainy night in Princeton Stadium. The victory kept Princeton undefeated at 6-0-1, while Yale fell to 4-3-0. Princeton is also ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region; Yale is ranked fourth in the New England Region.
"The Ivy League games are different," Negron said. "You're not just playing for yourself and your team. You're playing for your school."
Negron's goal was her eighth of the season, and it kept alive her streak of having at least one goal in every game this year. It also matched her season total of last year, when she led the Tigers with eight. As for Bell, a senior who has started every game but one in her career as a mostly defensive midfielder, the goal was the first of her career. Princeton started the scoring on Brea Griffiths' goal in the 19th minute on a feed from Negron on a scramble in front after a corner kick for the only goal of the first 71 minutes of the game. There would be five more goals in the final 19 minutes.
The wild ending started when Negron and Bell scored 22 seconds apart to make it 3-0 Tigers, but Michelle Gosselin rocketed a ball past Emily Vogelzang two minutes later to make it 3-1. Yale the had a golden opportunity slip away five minutes later, when Vogelzang stopped Christina Huang on a penalty kick to keep it a two-goal game.
That save looked even bigger in the 87th minute, when Lee Anne Jasper's free kick was stopped by Vogelzang, only to roll to Laurel Karnes, who redirected it into the goal to make it 3-2.
Princeton, though, answered with a goal by Kristina Fontanez after a cross by Bell with just 58 seconds to go.
Princeton, who outshot Yale 19-7. is at Stony Brook Monday night.
