Stephanie Berg and Alison Hashmall each reached the third round of the main singles draw at Penn's Cissie Leary Invitational this weekend as the Tigers finally began their fall season following last weekend's cancellation of the William & Mary Invitational.
Berg defeated Lyly Cao Minh of rival Harvard in the first round in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2, and then knocked off Kerstin Endlich of Old Dominion in the second round, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. Berg fell in the third round Saturday to Tulane's Julie Srekodub in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-3.
Hashmall also reached the third round before injury forced a default against Harvard's Courtney Bergman. Hashmall defeated Camille Herman of Old Dominion 6-1 and 6-3 in the first round and handed Darya Ivanov of Tulane a 6-0, 6-3 defeat in Round 2. Hashmall and partner Darcy Robertson also won their first-round doubles match, 8-5, against a team from Ohio State but were forced to default a second-round match due to injury.
Robertson advanced to the second round of the main singles draw, defeating Kristi Roemer of Northwestern in straight sets in the first round before falling to Penn's Alice Pirsu, 6-3 and 7-6 in the second round.
Princeton's Jessica Siebel won two matches in the consolation singles draw. She and Berg also competed in the doubles event, falling 8-5 in the first round to a team from Ohio State.
