Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton men's soccer team opens up its 2004 Ivy League schedule on Saturday afternoon when the Tigers host Dartmouth at 4 p.m. Princeton (4-2-1) will hope to improve on last season's Ivy mark of 3-3-1.
Ivy Play Underway
Today's game is the Ivy League opener for both Princeton and Dartmouth. The Tigers finished last season 3-3-1 in league play while the Big Green was just 1-6. All eight teams begin the Ivy season on Saturday.
Last Year
A year ago, Princeton picked up a 3-2 overtime win against Dartmouth in Hanover in both teams' Ivy opener.
Slow Start
The Big Green has had trouble generating offense to start the season, scoring no more than one goal in each of its first five games (1-1-3) before finally breaking through for three against Temple in the final round of the adidas/Hypertherm Classic in Hanover last weekend.
Getting Defensive
Dartmouth's defense has responded appropriately to its offense's lack of output, holding opponents to just six goals thus far for the season, an average of 0.89 goals per game. The 3-2 win over Temple was the only Big Green game in which either team scored multiple goals.
Home Cookin'
After two road tournaments in the last two weekends, Princeton returns home for three straight games at Lourie-Love Field. The Tigers take on American on Oct. 6 and Brown on Oct. 9 in addition to today's game against Dartmouth.
Princeton is 1-0 at home this season after defeating Drexel in the home opener Sept. 14. It was the Tigers' first win in a home opener since 2001. They have not won an Ivy League home opener since defeating Cornell in 1999.
Quick Start
Princeton is one of only three Ivy League teams that have recorded four wins. The other two are Penn and Harvard.
Rich Watch
Senior Ryan Rich has 14 career assists, which is tied for the sixth highest amount in Princeton history. He needs one more to move into the top five of all time. The record is 27, set by Andre Parris '96.
Between The Posts
Dartmouth's Rowan Anders has made 21 saves in six games, allowing less than a goal per game on average. He has one shutout, four one-goal performances, and one two-goal game in his six starts in net.
After allowing seven goals in the first three games of the season, Princeton goalkeeper Erik White has allowed just five in the past four games for a cumulative average of 1.77 goals against per game.
History Lesson
Princeton and Dartmouth have squared off 56 times since 1921. The Tigers lead the all-time series 35-16-5, including a 6-3-2 mark in the last 11 contests.
