New York - Esmeralda Negron continued her run at a record that has stood for 20 years. Princeton's defense pushed another mark to six years.
Negron scored twice to move within five goals of the Princeton career record and Princeton shut out Columbia for the sixth straight year as the 11th-ranked Tiger women's soccer team blanked the Lions 2-0 Saturday morning in New York City.
The win was the seventh straight for Princeton, who improved to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League. Columbia, who has not scored against Princeton since 1998, fell to 5-6 overall and 0-4 in the league.
"It was a typical game at Columbia," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "They always play us tough, and it's always good to get out of there with a win." Negron scored her first goal with 12 minutes remaining in the first half after Diana Matheson sent her on a run with a 25-yard pass. For Matheson, it was her fourth assist of the season. Negron then made it 2-0 when she finished a pass from Janine Willis with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Negron's two goals came after she had one goal and a school-record-tying three assists in a 7-1 win over American Tuesday night. She now has nine goals and eight assists for 26 points on the season, leaving her one assist away from the school single-season record and five points away from the school single-season record.
The goals were her 35th and 36th in her career, moving her to within five of Linda DeBoer's 20-year-old school record. She also has 85 career points, nine away from DeBoer's career mark.
Princeton outshot Columbia 23-3 in the game, and Madeleine Jackson made one save as she lowered her goals-against average to 0.16, tops in Division I. It was the fifth shutout of the year for Jackson and the eighth of the year for the Tigers.
Princeton and Penn are the lone unbeaten teams in the league, and the Quakers look to keep pace with the Tigers when they play Sunday at Dartmouth.
Princeton hosts Harvard Saturday night, Oct. 23, at Lourie-Love Field.
