Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton men's hockey team opened the 2004-05 season with an offensive outburst Friday night as the Tigers defeated Windsor 9-2 in an exhibition win at Baker Rink. Sophomore Grant Goeckner-Zoeller led a cast of 15 players that recorded points in the game with two goals of his own. Princeton begins the regular season in a week when the Tigers host St. Cloud State.
Princeton controlled the offense all night, but struggled to get it going in the first period. Despite outshooting the Lancers 10-3 in the period and having five power play opportunities, Princeton was only able to capitalize once. That goal, came 4:42 into the contest when sophomore Ian McNally hammered home a rebound from the left side of the crease. Juniors Dustin Sproat and Sebastian Borza assisted the goal as all three Tigers recorded their first of two points on the night. Junior goaltender Eric Leroux stopped all three Windsor shots in the period as the frame ended with Princeton holding a 1-0 lead. Princeton continued with its strong offensive pressure in the second period and broke through for six goals on 16 shots. Goeckner-Zoeller, Princeton's leading scorer a year ago, opened the scoring for the period at 4:22 on the power play and sophomore Kevin Westgarth made it 3-1 when he banged a rebound past Windsor's goaltender at 6:45. Borza fired a shot that rang off two posts and ricocheted to Westgarth who cashed it in for his first of two points on the night.
Junior Mark Masters scored from in front on a 5-on-3 power play at 12:57 and senior Neil Stevenson-Moore one-timed a Sproat pass into the net at 14:32 to make it 5-1. Freshman Landis Stankievech made it 6-1 19 seconds later when he fired a blocked McNally shot by the goaltender and Goeckner-Zoeller ended the Princeton scoring in the period with his second of the game at 16:47. Sophomore goaltender B.J. Sklapsky played the second period for the Tigers and he allowed one goal on three Lancer shots.
Princeton outscored Windsor 3-1 and outshot the Lancers 13-10 in the final period. Freshman Mike Moore scored on a blast form the point at 8:16 and junior Seamus Young closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 15:36. Freshman goaltender Jeff Mansfield played the final period and made nine saves on 10 shots.
Princeton's nine goal output was its highest goal total since the Tigers scored nine in a 9-3 win over Army on November 25, 1997.
The game marked the Baker Rink debut for new Princeton head coach Guy Gadwosky. His first regular-season contest will take place on Friday, October 29 at 7 p.m., when the Tigers host St. Cloud State of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association at Baker Rink.
