Cambridge, Mass. - Penalties were the story Friday night in Cambridge as Harvard defeated the Princeton men's hockey team 8-6. Both teams combined for eight power-play goals, but it was the three Crimson goals that came during a Princeton major penalty that put the game out of reach. Senior Luc Paquin had a goal and three assists as the Tigers fall to 2-3-1 on the season.
Harvard took advantage of an early power play to take a 1-0 lead 1:43 into the game. Noah Welch ended up with the puck on the blueline and used a screen to blast a shot by sophomore goaltender B.J. Sklapsky. Andrew Lederman assisted on the goal. Princeton knotted up the score at 7:21 when junior Sebastian Borza scored his first of the season and the seventh of his career. Borza picked off a cross-ice Harvard pass in their zone and went in all-alone on goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris. He faked to the forehand to freeze Grumet-Morris, then went to his backhand and slid it between the goalies pad and the goal post. Harvard outshot Princeton 10-7 in the period but only could push one past Sklapsky as the period ended with the score tied up at one. Harvard had four power-play chances in the period and made the first one count when Welch scored.
After two goals in the first period, both teams combined for six in the second period. Tom Cavanagh gave Harvard a 2-1 lead at the 4:30 mark, but Princeton knotted up the score at 8:41 when sophomore Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored on the power play off a pass from senior Luc Paquin.
Harvard then took advantage of a five-minute major called on Princeton freshman Eric Pridham for checking from behind to skate out to a 5-2 lead. Dan Murphy scored on a rebound at 12:16, Dylan Reese from the point at 15:07, and Cavanagh posted his second of the game at 15:39. The fifth goal came second after the major had expired, but it came before the skater was able to rejoin the play.
Princeton got one of those goals back and made it 5-3 before the end of the second period. Paquin kept in a Harvard clear and fed it across the blueline to junior Seamus Young. Young went cross-ice to junior Dustin Sproat who roofed it over a diving Grumet-Morris to move Princeton back within two goals, which is where the period ended. Harvard outshot Princeton in the penalty 18-13.
In the third period the game turned into a track meet as each team scored three goals to reach the final of 8-6. Harvard scored the first three of the period coming from Paul Dufault, Lederman and Kevin Du in the first eight minutes of the period. Princeton came back to add three goals in the third period. Sproat scored his second of the night at 9:36 from Neundorfer and Paquin on the power play. Goeckner-Zoeller made it two goals for the game at 14:02 on the power play. Paquin and Neundorfer in again on the assists. Princeton's final goal came at 18:32 when Paquin scored his second goal of the season and his fifth point of the game.
Sproat now has goals in three consecutive games. Paquin and Neundorfer have scored in two straight.
Sklapsky made 30 saves in the loss, while Grumet-Morris stopped 29 shots.
The Tigers resume play on Friday night when Union visits Baker Rink at 7 p.m.
