Princeton, N.J. - Six different Tigers scored goals and senior Luc Paquin had four assists as the Princeton men's hockey team climbed to the .500 mark with a 6-3 win over Yale Tuesday night at Baker Rink. The four-assist effort was Paquin's second such performance in four games. His 1.67 points per game average leads all defensemen in the nation.
Princeton (4-4-1; 4-3 ECACHL) had two excellent chances to open the scoring with breakaways in the first half of the first period. Yale goaltender Peter Cohen stopped sophomore Darroll Powe on the first one, but sophomore Grant Goeckner-Zoeller cashed in on the second one at 9:14 to give the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish. Paquin and junior Patrick Neundorfer assisted goeckner-Zoeller's back-hander. Junior Dustin Sproat made it 2-0 at 17:41 of the period when he tallied his eighth of the year. The goal came after Cohen stopped a Paquin blast from the right point, but the rebound came to Sproat who buried it into the open net. Goeckner-Zoeller also assisted on the goal. Sproat now has scored goals in six straight games. Goeckner-Zoeller, Neundorfer and Paquin all have points in six consecutive games.
Yale's Bill LeClerc scored with exactly one minute remaining in the period on the power play to send the teams to the locker room at 2-1. Yale outshot Princeton 9-6 in the period but Princeton junior goaltender Eric Leroux made eight saves to hold the Princeton lead.
In the second period, both team battled back-and-forth for 17 minutes until Princeton went ahead 3-1 on the power play on junior Sebastian Borza's third goal on the season. Borza's goal was assisted by Paquin and Goeckner-Zoeller and came when Borza ripped a wrist shot through a crowd and past Cohen.
Princeton added another goal with 15 seconds left in the period to take a 4-1 lead after two periods. Paquin stripped the puck off a Yale defender and carried it into the Yale zone. He pulled up to let his teammates join the play and through a pass in front. The pass bounced around and wound up on the stick of freshman Keith Shattenkirk. He quickly shuffled by Cohen for the first goal of his collegiate career and the eventual game-winner. Princeton outshot Yale 8-5 in the second period.
Princeton and Yale each scored twice in the final period to make the final score 6-3. Freshman Mike Moore scored on the power play at 3:48 for his first collegiate goal. The goal was assisted by senior Neil Stevenson-Moore and came on a shot from the point. Stevenson-Moore then made it six goals for the Tigers when he scored on the power play at 14:56. His goal came after sophomore Kevin Westgarth redirected Moore's point shot. The puck ricocheted to Stevenson-Moore who slid it by Cohen for his third of the year. He has scored goals in three straight games.
Robert Page and Christian Jensen scored for Yale in the third period.
Leroux made 25 saves and improved to 3-1-1 on the season. Cohen made 18 saves in the loss. Princeton was 3 for 6 on the power play for the night and lifted their nation's best power play unit's efficiency to 29.8%.
Princeton and Yale (0-9; 0-7) complete their home-and-home series on Saturday night in New Haven.
