New Haven, Conn. - Yale goaltender Matt Modelski made 36 saves including 16 in the first period to lift Yale to a 7-1 win over the Princeton men's hockey team Saturday night at Ingalls Rink. The Tigers played a spirited first period, but found themselves down by a pair after one and were unable to climb back into the game.
Princeton outshot Yale in the opening period but it was the Bulldogs that took an early 1-0 lead and made it 2-0 late in the period. Joe Zappala made it 1-0 at the 3:55 mark when he slid home a loose puck for his second goal of the year. Zach Mayer took the initial shot and Princeton goaltender Eric Leroux got some of it, but the puck trickled through him and Zappala won the race to it.
Yale made it 2-0 with one minute remaining when Christian Jensen scored off a face-off. Brad Mills won the draw back to Jensen whose quick wrist shot changed directions on its way to the net. Princeton outshot Yale 16-10 in the period but Yale's Matt Modelski stopped all 16 shots to keep the score at 2-0. Yale stretched its lead to 4-0 in the second period with a pair of goals off Princeton turnovers. Mayer made it 3-0 at the 1:09 mark when he fired a quick shot by the blocker of Leroux. Blair Yaworski and Zappala assisted.
Yaworski made it 4-0 at 17:01 when he hit home the rebound of a Matt Craig shot. Zappala assisted on the goal for his third point of the night. Princeton again outshot Yale, but Modelski was equal to the task on all 12 Tiger shots to keep Princeton scoreless through two periods.
Jensen and Zappala each scored early in the third period to extend Yale's lead to 6-0. Princeton got one of those goals back when freshman Erik Pridham scored his first career goal at 9:51. Sophomore Ian McNally and senior Neil Stevenson-Moore assisted on the goal. Stevenson-Moore extended his point streak to five games with the helper.
Bill LeClerc added a goal with eight seconds remaining to reach the final of 7-1.
Modelski made 36 saves on the night to record the win. Leroux made 17 saves through two periods and Sklapsky stopped 15 in the third for the Tigers.
Princeton returns to action next Friday night at Colgate.
