Stanford, Calif. - After Princeton scored the opening goal, Loyola Marymount took a 2-1 lead and held the slim margin all game long as the the Lions defeated the Tiger men's water polo team 6-5 in the third-place game of the 2004 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship, held at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center.
For the second day in a row, strong team defense and explosive offense chances defined the game. Princeton, which fell to UCLA in overtime, 7-5, in the semifinals, opened the scoring early in the first quarter, but Loyola Marymount responded with a pair of goals before that quarter ended.
Following the opening quarter, the teams were even through the next three periods, each team scoring once in the second, twice in the third and once again in the fourth as the Lions held on for the 6-5 win.
Mike Murray scored twice for the Tigers with the other goals coming from Nicholas Seaver, John Stover and Zach Beckmann. Peter Sabbatini made several big stops in the goal once again to keep Princeton within striking distance all game long.
Princeton completes the season 25-6. The 25 wins set a new single-season win record for Princeton water polo.
