Box Score
This one was over quickly, and the result was exactly what the Tigers and head coach John Thompson were looking for in their first home Ivy League game of the year.
Andre Logan scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half as Princeton stormed out of the gate early, took as much as a 25-point lead in the first 20 minutes and coasted in the second half on the way to a 61-45 victory over Dartmouth before 4,012 at Jadwin Gym Friday night.
The Tigers (10-6, 3-0), who won their season-high fourth straight game, shot 54% in the first half, held Dartmouth (3-16, 1-4) to 18% shooting in the first 20 minutes and 28% overall and outrebounded the Big Green by an impressive 38-23 margin on the way to handing the Big Green their ninth straight defeat. "I was more impressed with our defense than anything else," said Thompson. "We held them to 15 points at halftime, and it seemed like most of that came from the free-throw line."
Thompson was right, as the Big Green shot just 4 for 22 in the first half (compared to 7 for 10 from the line) and 12 for 43 for the game. Princeton has held its three Ivy League opponents to 49, 47 and 45 points and held Brown, Yale and Dartmouth to a combined 7 for 41 performance from three-point range in three wins.
"Princeton's always been known for playing great defense, and we want to continue that," said Logan, who shot 2 for 2 from three-point range as the Tigers finished 9 for 19 overall from behind the arc. "Our non-conference schedule prepared us to play games like these and we were ready on both ends of the floor."
The Tigers, who also got 12 points from Ed Persia and a career-best 10 from reserve guard Max Schafer, never trailed in the game, taking the lead 22 seconds in on a Scott Greenman three-pointer and leading by double digits less than seven minutes in. A 14-2 Princeton run in a six-minute span midway through the first half resulted in an insurmountable 33-8 Tiger lead after two Ed Persia free throws with 5:36 on the clock, and the Tigers led 39-15 at halftime.
Freshman Leon Pattman led Dartmouth with 18 points, but he was the only Big Green player in double figures. Dartmouth lost at Jadwin Gym for the 17th consecutive season, and the average margin of victory in those games is nearly 18 points per game.
Princeton, which hosts Harvard tomorrow at Jadwin Gym (7:30 pm, WPRB 103.3, GoPrincetonTigers.com, Patriot TV), improved to 3-0 in Ivy League play for the eighth straight year. The Tigers also had assists on 17 of their 23 baskets. Princeton has now outrebounded its three Ivy League opponents 103-67.
Nine different Tigers scored, including eight points and five rebounds off the bench from Mike Stephens and six points and four rebounds from Will Venable, who missed much of the second half after losing a tooth in a fall to the floor early in the half.
The Tigers (3-0) and Cornell (5-0) remain the only undefeated teams in league play after the Big Red's win at Brown Friday night.
