Princeton, N.J. - Brown scored three third period goals to snap a 2-2 tie and post a 5-2 win over the Princeton men's hockey team Friday night at Baker Rink. Princeton rallied to even the game at 2-2 late in the second period, but the Bears rebounded in the third to claim the victory.
Brown, the first-place team in the ECAC, had a lot of opportunities early in the first period, taking eight shots on an early power play, but were unable to crack Leroux until scoring on a 4-on-4 with 1:09 left in the period. Scott Ford made a clearing pass off the boards that Les Haggett picked up. Haggett entered the Princeton end on a breakaway. Leroux made the initial save, but Haggett got to the rebound and put it past Leroux to make it 1-0. The first period ended with Brown holding a 19-5 shot advantage. The Bears extended the lead to 2-2 1:38 into the second when the puck took a fortunate bounce right to Mike Meech's stick. Hagget dumped the puck into the Princeton zone and it hit the boards at a crack for the door and ricocheted to Meech in front of the net. The Tigers played strong in the period, and with two goals in a span of 1:57.
The first goal came on the power play. Sophomore Seamus Young collected a loose puck and fed sophomore Brian Carthas. Carthas quickly gave it freshman Max Cousins on the point. Cousins wasted little time and ripped a shot towards the net. The shot deflected off a Brown defender in front and beat Brown goaltender Yann Danis. The goal was the first of Cousins' college career.
At 16:18, Princeton evened the game up when senior Matt Maglione sprung senior Dan Hursh on a breakaway. Maglione's pass from his own goal line hit Hursh on the tape of his stick. Hursh then skated in all alone and beat Danis in the far upper corner. It was his first goal of the season. The period eneded knotted up at two as Princeton outshot Brown 15-12 in the period.
However fortunes changed in the third period, and a Bear power play tally at 5:20 proved to be the game-winner. Haggett won the faceoff draw in the Princeton back to his winger Brian Inhacak. He then fed Ford on the point who put a point shot into the Tiger net.
Brown added an insurance goal 55 seconds later to put the game away. Chris Swon redirected a Gerry Burke pass from the point by Leroux. Brownb added an empty-netter with 49 seconds remaining in the game.
Princeton returns to action in a week's time at Cornell.
