Riverside, Calif. - Ty Ries went 3 for 3 with two RBI and Melissa Finley had 11 strikeouts in Princeton's 9-1 win over Canisius at the U.C. Riverside Tournament. The Tigers also won the second game of the day 3-0 over the University of San Diego.
In the first game, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Erin Snyder opened with a single to left field. A Lindsay Motal double and a Ries single to right field brought home Snyder's pinch runner, Wendy Bingham, for the first run. Motal scored the second run on a passed ball. Princeton scored again in the top of the third when Snyder singled up the middle to send home Finley, who walked to first and stole second.
After three outs on the first three batters in the bottom of the third, the Tigers put up two more runs in the fourth. Lueke hit into a fielder's choice, advanced to second on the out and scored on Stephanie Steel's line drive past first. Steel reached home on a Finley single.
Trailing 5-0, Canisius scored its lone run in the fourth. Becky Owen singled and Caitlin Lever drove her home with a line drive past first. But the Tigers scored once more in the fifth before capping the win with three runs in the seventh.
Bingham and Motal each scored two runs and Snyder finished 2 for 2. Princeton's two extra-base hits were doubles from Motal and Amanda Erickson. Finley gave up just four hits, one walk and one run in six innings while Andrea Bunten pitched the first four innings and took the loss for Canisius
Against USD in the second game of the day, the Tigers needed just one inning of offense to pull off the 3-0 shutout. Finley sparked a three-run first inning with her season's first homer, a two-run rocket over the centerfield fence. Motal and Snyder each singled before an Erickson double to right centerfield scored Motal for the early Princeton lead.
Snyder had five strikeouts in seven innings for her second shutout of the season.
Princeton (4-3) plays host U.C. Riverside tomorrow, Sunday March 14 at 11 a.m. and then advances to either the championship game at 3 p.m. or the consolation game at 1 p.m.
