Chapel Hill, N.C. - After taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Princeton baseball team surrendered five runs in the bottom of the inning as North Carolina captured a 12-2 win Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Junior B.J. Szymanski hit a two-run homer in the first to account for Princeton's runs.
Princeton jumped ahead in the opening inning thanks Szymanski's third home run of the season. With one out, junior Adam Balkan singled to left field for his first of two hits on the day. Balkan has now hit safely in eight of Princeton's nine games. The next batter was Szymanski and he crushed a pitch over the 355 sign in right center. Szymanski also singled in the game and now has at least one hit in all nine of Princeton's game this season. The lead didn't last long though as North Carolina used a walk and five hits to push five runs across the plate in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 5-2 after one inning. The Tar Heels continued in the second scoring three runs on one hit and four walks to give UNC the 8-2 lead after two innings.
North Carolina strung together a pair of hits the fourth and fifth innings to produce additional runs and make the score 11-2 after five innings. The Tar Heels also put together three hits in the seventh to push another run across the plate.
Junior Aaron Herr took the loss in his first start of the season. He allowed eight runs on five hits and five walks. Freshman Eric Walz entered in relief midway through the second inning and pitched three innings allowing one run on two hits. Junior Worth Lumry came in for two innings beginning in the fifth and allowed two runs on two hits in that inning. Junior Brian Kappel pitched the seventh inning and allowed one run on three hits while striking out two. Senior Eric Fitzgerald came in to pitch the eighth and allowed one hit.
