March 19, 2004
The NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee selected eight Princeton fencers, including Mid-Atlantic South regional winners Ben Solomon (men's epee) and Jacqueline Leahy (women's foil), to compete in the field of 144 competitors at the 2004 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships. Brandeis University will host the championships at the Gosman Sports Center on March 25-28.
Leahy and Sara Jew-Lim, who finished fifth at the NCAA Regionals, earned spots in the women's foil field while Erin McGarry and Mina Morova were selected in women's epee and sabre. McGarry took third and Morova placed ninth at the Regionals.
In the men's field, Solomon and Fenil Ghodadra, who placed seventh at Regionals, were chosen in men's epee while Alejandro Bras and Eric Stodola earned spots in men's foil. Bras finished in ninth and Stodola in 11th at the Regionals. The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships include individual events in each of the six weapons (women's foil, women's epee, women's sabre, men's foil, men's epee, men's sabre).
Fencers will compete in a round-robin of 24 fencers in five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top four fencers in each event will fence direct elimination 15-touch bouts for first, second, third and fourth place. Absolute ties for the seeding will be broken as follows: for positions one through three, by a coin toss; for position four, by a fence-off.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
