UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Seniors Theresa Sherry scored all three of her goals in a 6-0 Princeton run that ended the game as the top-ranked women's lacrosse team defeated No. 18 Penn State, 13-7, in a game played indoors at Holuba Hall on the Penn State campus Saturday afternoon.
Kristen Burke tied the game for Penn State at 7-7 with 15 minutes remaining in the game, but Sherry and Elizabeth Pillion would score goals in a 45-second span a minute later to give the Tigers (5-0) a two-goal lead. Sherry then scored two goals in a 10-second span with less than eight minutes left to give the Tigers an insurmountable 11-7 lead, and Kathleen Miller and Liza Hillenbrand would then score goals in the final two minutes for Princeton, which won its 14th straight game dating back to last season. Hillenbrand added three goals for Princeton, which took a 6-2 lead at halftime but saw the Nittany Lions (1-5) score five of the first six goals of the second half to tie the game. Miller, Lindsey Biles and Elizabeth Pillion each added two goals for Princeton, which defeated Penn State for the seventh straight season.
Burke led the Lions with three goals and junior Emily Chambers added two tallies, while senior Katie Jeschke and sophomore Shari Maslin each posted a goal. Seniors Katie Hartman and Janique Craig notched three and one assists, respectively.
Pillion got the Tigers on the board less than a minute into the contest but a Nittany Lion goal by Chambers and assisted by Hartman tied the score at 1-1 at the 6:17 mark. Princeton then scored five unanswered goals to take the 6-1 lead before a Chambers free position goal at 20:51 cut the Tiger lead to four at 6-2, which would be the halftime score. Hillenbrand and Biles combined for four goals in the five-goal Princeton run before halftime that came in a nine-minute span.
The first of Burke's three second-half goals came less than two minutes into the second stanza and a Maslin mark 1:15 later made the score 6-4. Another Burke goal that was assisted by Craig at the 36:48 mark pulled Penn State to within one but Princeton's Tara Hardiman pushed the advantage to two with less than 20 minutes remaining in the contest. A goal from Jeschke, who was returning from injury, made the score 7-6 and Burke's third goal tied the score at 7-7 with less than 15 minutes to play.
Princeton outshot the Nittany Lions 37-20, but Penn State goalie Lee Tortorelli had 12 saves to help keep her team in the game. Princeton goalie Sarah Kolodner had seven saves for the Tigers, who have allowed just 29 goals (less than six per game) in five wins to begin the 2004 season.
Penn State's five losses have all come to ranked teams, including four teams currently ranked inthe IWLCA Top 10.
