The Princeton women's lacrosse team begins its quest for a fourth straight Ivy League title when it travels to New York City Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. game against Columbia at Baker Field.
The Tigers have won 19 of their last 21 league games on the way to three straight league titles, with the only losses coming at Yale last year and at Dartmouth in 2001. Princeton's loss to the Bulldogs in 2003 was its last loss in general--the Tigers have won 14 straight games since then, including their first five of this season.
Princeton hasn't lost to Columbia since the Lions established their varsity program in 1998. In six games against Columbia, the Tigers have outscored the Lions 101-8.
The Tigers, ranked No. 1 in the IWLCA poll for every week this season, improved to 5-0 on the season with a 13-7 victory at Penn State this past Saturday. Theresa Sherry scored all three of her goals in a 6-0 Princeton run that ended the game. Junior Elizabeth Pillion, who had two goals and two assists against the Nittany Lions, was named the Ivy League's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after scoring four goals and adding five assists in two games last week. Princeton's 14-game streak ties the 1994 team, which won its first 14 games of the season on the way to the program's first national championship. The team record for consecutive wins is 20, set over the 2002 and 2003 seasons when the Tigers won their final 19 games of the 2002 season and their first game of last season.
Columbia, now 5-1 on the season is off to the best start in the program's eight-year history. The Lions defeated Saint Joseph's on Sunday, 11-4, behind Carrie Anderer's three goals and an assist. Anderer was also named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
The Tigers have allowed just 29 goals in five games this season and have allowed single digits in goals in 17 of their last 18 games dating back to last season.
Less than 48 hours after the Columbia game, No. 1 Princeton visits undefeated and No. 2 Georgetown in the game of the early season in women's lacrosse Friday afternoon. Game time is 4 p.m. at North Kehoe Field on the Georgetown campus, and the game can be heard live on the internet at www.goprincetontigers.com and on the radio on WHWH-AM 1350 in the Princeton area.
