Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Stony Brook

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Princeton baseball team improved to 11-7 on the season after splitting a doubleheader on a cold and windy afternoon at Stony Brook on Sunday. The Seawolves took the opener 2-1, but the Tigers roared back with a 4-1 win in the second game.
In Game 1, Princeton jumped on top 1-0 with a run in the second inning. Freshman Sal Iacono led off with an infield single to the shortstop. He advanced to second on a groundout and scored when freshman Aaron Prince reached on a throwing error by Stony Brook's second baseman.
The Sea Wolves evened up the game at one apiece in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Cole Chicatelli singled through the right side. Dave Mischo then dew a walk and Stony Brook drew even when Nick Theoharis doubled off the left field wall. Stony Brook moved ahead in the fifth inning by stringing together three straight singles to take a 2-1 lead. The run was scored when Brett Bernard's bloop single fell just beyond second base allowing Kevin Solano to score the go-ahead run as Stony Brook claimed the 2-1 victory.
Princeton freshman Eric Walz pitched all seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits. He fell to 2-1 with the loss. Stony Brook's Kevin Fitzgerald earned the complete-game win. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out nine.
After three scoreless innings in Game 2, Princeton moved ahead 1-0 in the fourth inning. Senior Eric Fitzgerald led off the inning with a single through the left side on the first pitch. Junior B.J. Szymanski then singled through the right side to advance Fitzgerald to third. Junior Adam Balkan then flied out to centerfield and Fitzgerald tried to score on the play but was thrown out by the centerfielder. Szymanski was able to move to third on the play. Iacono then came to the plate and hit a single through the left side that scored Szymanski.
The Tigers added three more runs in their following at-bat to take a 4-0 lead. With one out, senior Ryan Reich singled to centerfield. Sophomore Matthew Becker was then hit by a pitch to put runners on second and third. A wild pitch then moved the runners each up a base into scoring position which proved important when senior Steve Young singled up the middle to score both runs. After another out, Szymanski hit a bloop double that dropped between the centerfielder, rightfielder and shortstop to score Young.
Up 4-0, freshman pitcher Gavin Fabian cruised through the Stony Brook order taking a scoreless three-hitter into the ninth inning. In the ninth, the Seawolves were able to muster a pair of hits and a run but did not threaten any further as Fabian posted his second win of the season.
The win was Princeton's third in four games this season against Stony Brook. Princeton returns to action on Thursday afternoon when the Tigers visit Rutgers at 3 p.m.
