The weather was cold at Class of 1952 Stadium, but Princeton junior Lindsey Biles certainly wasn't.
Biles scored four of her career-high-tying five goals in the first 18 minutes of the game, helping Princeton take a 9-3 halftime lead, and also added two assists as the top-ranked Tigers eased passed Delaware, 15-8, in a women's lacrosse game played Tuesday night.
Biles scored twice on unassisted goals in the first seven minutes, helping the Tigers (8-0) take a 3-0 lead, and then had two goals in a 1:49 span later in the half thanks to feeds from Theresa Sherry as Princeton took a 5-1 lead. Her fifth goal came 7:07 into the second half, giving the Tigers an 11-5 lead, and the Blue Hens (2-6) never got closer than four goals after that. "Lindsey really came to play tonight," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer, whose Tigers won their 17th straight game dating back to last season. "She led us right from the beginning of the game, which we needed because it wasn't our best night overall."
The game was a sloppy one that saw 38 turnovers, 22 from the Tigers, but Princeton controlled 17 of the game's 25 draws, including 10 of 12 in the second half, to maintain control throughout. Delaware scored four of the first six goals of the second half to pull within 11-7 with just over 19 minutes left, but Theresa Sherry and Elizabeth Pillion would stem that run with unassisted goals later on to put Princeton ahead 13-7.
"We had way too many turnovers, but you have to give Delaware credit for taking it to us throughout the game," said Sailer. "They're not worried about their record, just about playing hard."
Laura Libertini, Jenny Diana and Stephanie McQuade each scored twice for Delaware, which lost to the Tigers for the 15th straight time and hasn't beaten Princeton since the 1989 season.
Pillion added three goals for Princeton, while Sherry had two goals and two assists. Pillion also had eight draw controls for the Tigers, who haven't lost since a defeat at Yale April 13 of last season.
After Diana pulled Delaware within 6-3 on a goal with 6:40 left in the first half, Princeton scored three times in the final six minutes to grab a 9-3 halftime lead. Pillion's first goal, her 13th of the season, gave Princeton a 7-3 lead with 6:03 on the clock, and Ingrid Goldberg's fourth goal in the last two games gave the Tigers an 8-3 advantage with 5:49 on the clock. Sophomore Olachi Opara then came off the bench to score her second goal of the season just 1:27 before halftime to give Princeton a six-goal lead.
Tara Hardiman, Mary Minshall and Katie Yakulis also scored goals for Princeton, which has outscored its opponents 104-50 in eight wins this season. Goalie Sarah Kolodner had five of her seven saves in the second half.
Lauren Burtch had six saves for Delaware in relief of starter Patrice Hughes, who left the game after Opara's goal with 1:27 left in the first half.
