Johns Hopkins improved to 2-0 on the young season, while Princeton slipped to 1-1. The Tigers are at Virginia, who fell 18-12 to Syracuse Saturday afternoon, next Saturday.
"They're a great team," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney of Hopkins. "We talked about staying away from big runs. We wanted to hold them to two's, not four's and five's." Princeton was led by freshmen Scott Sowanick, who scored two goals, and Peter Trombino, who had one goal and one assist.
Sowanick started the scoring off an assist from Trombino 2:41 into the first quarter, but Johns Hopkins scored the next four goals before Jason Doneger stopped that run. Hopkins then scored two more to make it 6-2 before Trombino scored on Ryan Boyle's assist with 1:12 remaining in the half to make it 6-3 at intermission. Casino's goal early in the third quarter gave Princeton brief hope before the big Hopkins run.
Johns Hopkins outshot Princeton 39-25. Princeton outshot Hopkins 13-4 in the second quarter, though each team scored two goals during that stretch.
Hopkins dominated possession, winning 17 of 23 face-offs.
