PHILADELPHIA - Seniors Milo Adams and Brian Kirschbaum each ended their careers with sixth-place finishes, while sophomore Jake Butler earned a team-best fifth-place finish, as the Princeton wrestling team concluded its 2003-04 season with a 10th-place finish at the 100th EIWA championships.
Kirschbaum had to fight hard in the 133-pound consolation bracket to place for the third straight year. After falling in the EIWA quarterfinals to Penn's Matt Eveleth, Kirschbaum won a pair of 1-point decisions to guarantee a spot on the podium. Kirschbaum beat ESU's Dan Gonzales 4-3, and then topped Rutgers' Dare Ajibade 2-1. His run for third place, and a potential NCAA berth, ended when he was pinned by Army's Bernard Gardner. He was pinned by Eveleth in the fifth-place match to end his senior year with a 19-15. Adams opened his run in the 141-pound consolation draw by topping sixth-seeded Anthony Constantino of Columbia 6-2. He followed that up with a 5-2 win over Brown's Mike Ashton, a wrestler who pinned Adams earlier in the year. Navy's Nate Gulosh pinned him to force him into the 5/6 match, and Rutgers' Donnie Defilippis, who routed Adams 14-2 a week ago, edged out a 2-1 win.
The best showing in the consolation brackets came from the 197-pound Butler, who had only four matches of experience entering the EIWA championships because of an injury. The Tiger sophomore went 4-1 in the consolation brackets to gain fifth place. After pinning American's Adam Montgomery in the first period, he eliminated the sixth-seeded Todd Wisman of Army with a 7-3 win. Rutgers' John Foscolo, who defeated Butler 10-5 last week, was knocked out by the red-hot sophomore in a 10-3 decision. Navy's fifth-seeded Thayer Paxton topped Butler 6-2, but he came back to win an impressive final match. Butler topped the third seed, Lehigh's Matt Cassidy, with a 5-3 decision.
