The Princeton women's lacrosse team has its school-record winning streak. Now it's onto the more important business at hand--winning the Ivy League title.
The top-ranked Tigers can take another step toward that goal when they visit Harvard as part of a women's/men's doubleheader at Jordan Field Saturday afternoon. The women's game begins at noon and can be heard live on the internet at goprincetontigers.com.
Princeton (12-0, 4-0), which has 11 straight wins over Harvard, is tied with Dartmouth at the top of the league standings. Should the Tigers defeat the Crimson, and the Big Green get wins Saturday over Penn and Wednesday over Harvard, next Saturday's Princeton-Dartmouth game at Class of 1952 Stadium would likely be for the Ivy League title.
But before that happens, the Tigers need a victory against the Crimson (5-6, 0-3), who fell under .500 with a 14-11 loss to New Hampshire Wednesday. Harvard's 0-3 Ivy record is a bit misleading, however, as the Crimson have lost those three games by a total of four goals, including one-goal defeats against Brown and Penn.
Princeton won its 21st straight game Wednesday night, defeating Penn 10-3 in a driving rainstorm at Class of 1952 Stadium. Theresa Sherry led the Tigers with four goals, moving into third place all-time at Princeton in that category, as Princeton defeated the Quakers for the 11th straight year. Today's Note of the Day
On the Record ? Princeton's win over Penn Wednesday was its 21st straight victory, a program record. The Tigers had won 20 games in a row spanning the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
Five More Things You Can't Live Without
Streak Facts ? Princeton has outscored its opposition 278-127 during its 21-game winning streak, an average margin of victory of more than seven goals per game.
Happy 300th! ? Chris Sailer is coaching her 300th game at Princeton today. Sailer has guided the Tigers to wins in 227 of her first 299 games as head coach (76%).
On the Defensive ? Princeton has allowed just 13 goals in its last three games. The Tigers have allowed just five goals combined in the first halves of those three games.
Up the Ladder? Theresa Sherry is now in third place all-time at Princeton with 145 career goals. Sherry passed both Kim Smith (142) and Lauren Simone (143) with four goals against Penn Wednesday.
An Almost Streak? Princeton has won 27 of its last 28 games. The only loss in that stretch came at Yale April 13 of last season.
More Notes & Anecdotes
Where Have You Gone, Joe Dimaggio? ? Princeton's 21-game winning streak is still 29 games short of the NCAA Division I record. Maryland won 50 straight games from 1995-1997.
More from the Unbeaten? Princeton has never finished a season without a loss. The Tigers finished with just one loss in national championship seasons in both 2002 and 1994.
More Streaks ? Princeton has defeated Harvard 11 consecutive times. The Tigers haven't lost to the Crimson since the 1992 NCAA tournament semifinals.
By the Numbers ? Since the beginning of the 1993 season, Princeton has a 62-2 combined record against the six Ivy League schools other than Dartmouth.
Topping the Charts ? The Tigers rank first in NCAA Division I in scoring defense (6.08 gpg), and goalie Sarah Kolodner leads the nation in goals-against average (5.77).
Movin' On Up ? Theresa Sherry is now sixth all-time at Princeton with 174 career points (145 goals, 29 assists). Sherry needs three points to pass Kim Smith and move into fifth place.
Smiles for Biles ? Lindsey Biles has at least three goals in eight of Princeton's 12 games this season. Biles has 22 points (17 goals, five assists) in Princeton's last five games.
A Real Pick-Me Up ? Elizabeth Pillion ranks in the top five nationally in draw controls per game (3.08). Pillion is also one of four Tigers with 20 or more goals.
20-20 Vision ? Kathleen Miller became Princeton's fourth 20-goal scorer this season with three goals against Penn.
Thanks for the Help ? Liza Hillenbrand had five assists in the first half at Temple April 7, the most by a Princeton player in a game this season.
The Gold Standard ? Ingrid Goldberg has scored 10 goals in her past six games after scoring six goals in her first two seasons at Princeton.
Fifth at 10 ? Tara Hardiman became the fifth 10-goal scorer for Princeton with three goals at Temple April 7. Hardiman's 11 goals have come on just 18 shots.
I'm Honored ? Katie Norbury was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week April 5. Norbury is also tied for the team lead with 20 caused turnovers this season.
Not Just a Scorer ? Theresa Sherry leads Princeton in caused turnovers (20), is second on the team in both draw controls (29) and third on the team in groundballs (25).
Near the Top ? Lindsey Biles ranks second in the Ivy League in scoring (37-10-47) behind Yale's Miles Whitman.
Reimers & Reason ? Freshman Caitlin Reimers has started every game this season at either midfield or attack.
