CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior Theresa Sherry scored a career-high six goals, including three straight in a four-goal Princeton run in the second half that put the game away, as the top-ranked Tigers stayed unbeaten with a 17-7 victory over Harvard in an Ivy League game played at Jordan Field Saturday afternoon.
Sherry, who had moved into third place all-time at Princeton in goals with four against Penn Wednesday, continued her hot streak with six goals on nine shots Saturday. She had three in the first half, including one with 3:15 left that gave the Tigers (13-0, 5-0) a 7-3 halftime lead, and then scored three straight in a span of less than four minutes to extend Princeton's lead to 12-5 midway through the second half.
Harvard (5-7, 0-4) was as close as 5-3 when Catherine Sproul scored with 6:32 left in the first half, but the Tigers would score four straight after that in a seven-minute frame spanning halftime to take control of the game. Sherry, who now has 151 career goals, also had an assist on Tara Hardiman's goal for Princeton five minutes in as the Tigers took a lead they would never relinquish. Sherry also regained the team lead in both goals (38) and points (48).
Kathleen Miller, Liza Hillenbrand and Christine Dobrosky each added two goals for the Tigers, who won their 22nd straight game dating back to last season and defeated Harvard for the 12th straight year. Elizabeth Pillion had three assists in the game, two coming on goals by Sherry.
Casey Owens led Harvard with three goals. The Crimson won the opening draw control of the game and held possession for the first four-and-a-half minutes, but Princeton forced a turnover and scored immediately after that and would never trail in the game.
The game was head coach Chris Sailer's 300th at the helm of the Princeton program. Sailer has 228 wins (76%) in those 300 games.
Princeton's 17 goals tied a season high, previously set against Temple April 7. The Tigers have allowed just 20 goals in their last four games and are averaging nearly 14 goals per game in stretch.
The Tigers host Dartmouth next Saturday at Class of 1952 Stadium (3 p.m) in a game that could decide the Ivy League championship. The Big Green is also 5-0 in the Ivy League after a win over Penn Saturday and will enter next Saturday's game 6-0 should they beat Harvard on Wednesday.
