The Princeton women's lacrosse team has won three national championships, reached 13 NCAA tournaments and won eight Ivy League titles. But the Tigers have never finished the regular season without a loss, a feat that head coach Chris Sailer's team can accomplish Saturday with a win at Brown (1 p.m.).
The Tigers (15-0, 6-0 Ivy), the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation in the IWLCA poll, made it through their toughest test yet Wednesday night, holding off No. 4 Maryland 8-7 in overtime thanks to Tara Hardiman's goal with 17.8 seconds left. The win not only kept Princeton perfect in 2004 but extended the Tigers' winning streak to 24 games dating back to last season.
Of course, even if Princeton wins in Providence Saturday, there's still the matter of winning the four most important games of the season--the NCAA tournament. The Tigers will have 11 days off before the first round of that tournament begins on Thurs. May 13, with eight games at campus sites. Selections for the tournament will be announced on Sun., May 9, at 6:30 p.m., and the selection show will be televised live by CSTV (DirecTV Channel 610).
Brown (6-7, 2-4 Ivy) lost to Connecticut by an 11-9 score Wednesday afternoon in Providence. Kate Staley leads the Bears with 29 goals in 2004.
