Freshman Kathleen Miller scored a season-high five goals, including four in a 7-2 Princeton spurt in the second half, and Lindsey Biles scored all three of her goals in a six-minute span early in the final 30 minutes as the top-ranked Tigers ran past Cornell, 16-10, in an Ivy League women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Leading just 7-6 at halftime against the surprising Big Red (1-7, 0-2 Ivy), Miller and Biles gave Princeton (9-0, 2-0 Ivy) some needed insurance by fashioning a four-goal spurt that gave the Tigers a 12-7 lead with 18 minutes left. Miller drove the right side of the crease and scored an unassisted goal with 27:34 left to give the Tigers a 9-7 lead, and Biles then scored with 22:58 left to put Princeton ahead by three. The junior then scored her 27th and 28th goals of the year in a 3:46 span after that, connecting on similar plays thanks to similar passes from behind the goal from senior Tara Hardiman. "I think we started to work better together in the second half," said Biles, who has 28 goals in nine games this season after scoring 30 goals all of last year. "I don't think we took them lightly at all, but we weren't playing as well as we could in the first half."
Cornell's Lyndsay Robinson would score with 13 minutes left to pull the Big Red within 12-8, but Miller scored on two free-position shots after that to give the Tigers a six-goal lead in the final minutes.
Hardiman, Elizabeth Pillion and Theresa Sherry each added two goals for No. 1 Princeton, which won its 18th straight game overall, two shy of tying a program record. The Tigers also defeated Cornell for the 17th straight time and improved to 24-2 all-time against the Big Red.
Cornell controlled the game's early minutes and took a 1-0 lead on Kristen Smith's goal six minutes in. But the Tigers then scored four straight in a six-minute span, the final goal coming from senior Liza Hillenbrand, to take a 4-1 lead midway through the first half. Hillenbrand was later forced to leave the game with an injury and did not return in the second half.
Princeton still led 6-3 after Pillion's goal with 6:09 left in the half, but Jaime Quinn and Lisa Giugliano would score goals for Cornell in a 36-second span to pull the Big Red within 6-5. Quinn's third goal of the first half with just 1:13 left pulled Cornell to within 7-6 at half.
Hardiman and freshman Christine Dobrosky each had two assists for the Tigers, who improved to 18-1 in their last 19 Ivy League home games. Princeton outshot Cornell 34-24, including 21-10 in the decisive second half.
Quinn had four goals for Cornell, while Smith and Robinson each scored two. Allison Schindler added two assists for the Big Red, which hasn't defeated Princeton since the 1985 season.
Goalie Maggie Fava had eight saves for Cornell, while Sarah Kolodner had six of her seven saves for Princeton in the second half.
