Princeton senior midfielder Theresa Sherry has been named as one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded by the University Club of Washington, D.C., to the most outstanding female and male collegiate lacrosse players in the nation.
The Tewaaraton Trophy will be awarded on Thurs., June 3, at a ceremony and dinner at Washington's National Geographic Society. CSTV will air a Tewaaraton Awards special on Thursday, July 1, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
Sherry, a team captain in 2004, is a two-time first-team All-America selection and three-time first-team All-Ivy pick who ranks third all-time at Princeton with 155 career goals and fifth all-time at Princeton with 190 career points. She has 42 goals and a team-leading 15 assists this season in leading the Tigers to an undefeated record and the top seed in the NCAA tournament. The four other finalists vying for the prestigious award are Virginia's Amy Appelt, the nation's leading goal scorer in 2004, Maryland's Kelly Coppedge, one of just 22 players in NCAA Division I history to score 200 career goals, James Madison's Gail Decker, the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Year, and Georgetown's Michi Ellers, the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year.
Princeton's Rachael Becker was last season's Tewaaraton Trophy winner. Two of Sherry's teammates in 2004, Lindsey Biles and Elizabeth Pillion, were among the 20 semifinalists for the 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy announced last month.
The Tewaaraton Award Foundation, in conjunction with the University Club of Washington, D.C., formally established the Tewaaraton Trophy on Aug. 29, 2000. Today, the Tewaaraton Trophy is recognized as the preeminent lacrosse award honoring the top female and male varsity lacrosse player in the United States. The Foundation honors lacrosse, the original and oldest American sport, through the Tewaaraton name and by promoting the game through the award.
