The Princeton women's lacrosse team hadn't played a game for 12 days entering Thursday's NCAA first-round game with Colgate. But you couldn't tell that by the Tigers' performance throughout just about the entire 60 minutes.
Lindsey Biles led seven different Princeton scorers with five goals, moving within four of Princeton's all-time single-season goal-scoring mark, and the Tigers used three big goal-scoring runs to take control on the way to an 18-6 victory over the Raiders before 1,207 at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The Tigers scored the game's first goals and had the game's first 12 shots, scored seven straight goals after Colgate had cut their deficit to 5-2 midway through the first half and then scored six straight goals in a 16-minute span in the second half to make it a double-digit lead. Princeton (17-0) also won its 26th straight game dating back to last season and improved to 4-0 in NCAA first-round games since the tournament increased to 16 teams in 2001, outscoring their opponents 76-14 in those four games.
"It wasn't always pretty but we got the job done," said Biles, whose 53 goals this season are the second-most in team history. "But that's been the way this team has been all season, and it's good that we've been able to do that all year."
"I'm happy that everyone was able to get involved tonight in a big win," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "We're going to need contributions from everyone if we want to continue throughout the tournament."
Elizabeth Pillion and Kathleen Miller each added three goals for Princeton, which outshot Colgate (13-7) 36-13, including 19-4 in the first half. The Raiders, making their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, got three goals from Katie McVeigh, who finished the season with 51 goals.
Pillion had two goals in a 5-0 Princeton run that opened the game before Amanda Bradshaw and McVeigh scored for Colgate to make it 5-2 with 9:30 left in the first half. But the Tigers then got goals from Pillion and Biles in a 37-second span near the end of the first half to take an 8-2 halftime lead, and then scored the first four goals of the second half to take a double-digit advantage seven minutes into the half.
Colgate cut their deficit to 12-4 on goals by Kelly Winning and Anne Coomber later in the half, but the Tigers then scored five straight goals again, with two each coming from Biles and Miller.
Princeton won 15 of the game's 24 draw controls and scored on four of its six free-position shots. The Tigers, the only undefeated team in women's or men's Division I lacrosse, have now outscored their opponents 227-105 in 17 games this season, an average margin of victory over nearly seven goals per game.
Biles added two assists for Princeton, while Sherry, Goldberg and Christine Dobrosky each scored two goals.
The Tigers now face a rematch with Ivy rival Dartmouth in Sunday's quarterfinal round, a game that will take place at Class of 1952 Stadium at 2 p.m. Princeton defeated the Big Green by a 17-8 score April 24, with Biles scoring four goals and adding three assists in the game.
