Theresa Sherry, whose tremendous offensive and defensive abilities in the midfield led the Princeton women's lacrosse team to an undefeated regular season in 2004, was named the Ivy League's Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year in a vote of the league's eight head coaches released Thursday.
Sherry, who has 42 goals and a team-leading 15 assists, will conclude her career ranked in the top five all-time at Princeton in both goals and points. But she also has demonstrated versatility in other parts of the game in 2004, ranking second on the Tigers in draw controls (38) and caused turnovers (21) and third on the team in groundballs (31).
The senior co-captain from Baltimore, Md., currently ranks third all-time at Princeton with 155 career goals and fifth all-time at the school with 190 career points. She earns first-team All-Ivy honors for the third time after earning second-team all-league honors as a freshman in 2001.
Three other Princeton players join Sherry on the All-Ivy first team, and two were unanimous selections--juniors Lindsey Biles and Elizabeth Pillion. Biles leads the Tigers with 48 goals, just eight shy of Cristi Samaras's single-season team record of 56, while Pillion has 26 goals and 14 assists and leads the Tigers with 41 draw controls.
Senior defender Katie Norbury, a co-captain along with Sherry, also earned first-team All-Ivy honors. Norbury, a three-year starter, leads the team with 22 caused turnovers in 2004 and leads a defense that has allowed just 6.12 goals per game, tops in the nation.
Three Tigers earned second-team All-Ivy honors including freshman Kathleen Miller, who was also named the league's Rookie of the Year. Miller scored 25 goals and added 11 assists during the regular season. Also earning second-team honors were sophomore defender Lauren Vance, who tied Norbury for the team lead with 22 caused turnovers, and junior goalie Sarah Kolodner, who leads the nation with a 5.93 goals-against average this season.
Two other Princeton players earned honorable mention All-Ivy honors--senior Liza Hillenbrand, whose 14 goals this season equalled her career output entering the year, and senior defender Mary Beth Hogan, who successfully made the transition from midfield to defense throughout her career.
