CAMDEN, N.J. - The Princeton open crew hasn't stood atop the Ivy League mountain since 1997, but the Tigers outlasted 2003 champion Radcliffe by one second to win the EAWRC championship and the 2004 Ivy League title.
Princeton, which went 7-0 against Ivy League rivals during the regular season, entered Sunday's grand final as the top seed. Radcliffe entered as the defending champion and the Tigers' top rival. The two boats left third-place Yale and went head-to-head for the title. Princeton finished in 6:16.10, exactly one second ahead of the Crimson.
This is Princeton's eighth Ivy League title, and its first in seven years. Future members of the Tigers hope there won't be as long a wait for the ninth title. The second varsity eight reached the medal stand with a third-place finish in its grand final, and the novice eight claimed victory in its final by nearly four seconds over Cornell. Princeton will look to grab the biggest title in the sport, the NCAA championship, during the first weekend in June. Until then, though, the Tigers will happily wear the crown of Ivy League champions.
