Stover And Seaver Score Three Goals Each In Water Polo's 11-4 Win Over U.C. Santa Cruz

Princeton, N.J. - John Stover had three goals and three steals and Peter Sabbatini made seven saves in three quarters to lead the water polo team past U.C. Santa Cruz 11-4 in Princeton's home opener at DeNunzio Pool. The 13th-ranked Tigers continue action in their annual Princeton Invitational Tournament with two games tomorrow.
Princeton jumped to a 2-0 start in the first quarter and then padded its lead with six goals in the second to enter the break ahead 8-1. The Slugs shut out the Tigers in the third period and scored two goals to close in 8-3 before the final six minutes.
Freshman Scott Syverson replaced All-America goalie Sabbatini for the last quarter, when he made three saves and allowed just one goal to preserve the win.
Nicholas Seaver tied Stover, a 2003 All-America honorable mention, for a team-best three goals while Chris Kelsch added two goals and three assists. Reid Joseph, the 2003 Southern Division Rookie of the Year, chipped in a goal, an assist and two steals.
Freshman Zach Beckmann got his career off to a fine start as he won one sprint and had a goal and an assist while playing all four quarters. Sean Dryden also scored for the Tigers, who are 1-0 with four more games this weekend.
Princeton meets Fordham at 11:15 a.m. and Brown at 8 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday Sept. 11.
