Brea Griffiths, who led a Princeton defense that shut out two opponents and scored a huge goal herself, has been named the Ivy League's women's soccer Player of the Week.
Griffiths, a senior from Burlington, Ont., scored Princeton's first goal of a 3-0 win over Yale in the Ivy opener for both Friday night. She also helped Princeton hold Yale and Hartford scoreless in two games while allowing a total of nine shots between them.
Princeton and Yale were scoreless early in the second half when Griffiths headed in a cross from Emily Behncke for a goal that started the Tigers towards seven goals in the final 125 minutes of their weekend. Princeton held Yale scoreless and to five shots after the Bulldogs came into the game averaging 14.3 shots per game, best in the Ivy League.
The Tigers then outshot Hartford 32-4 in Sunday's 4-0 win.
Griffiths, a two-time captain for the Tigers, was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week earlier this season.
Princeton, who improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy Leage with the weekend sweep, plays at home for the first time in 30 days when it hosts Dartmouth Saturday afternoon (1). Dartmouth ended Princeton's three-year Ivy championship run a year ago.
In addition to Princeton's win over Yale, other Ivy results from the first weekend saw Dartmouth defeat Brown 2-0, Penn defeat Harvard 1-0 and Cornell defeat Columbia 2-1.
