HANOVER, N.H. - Princeton and senior goalkeeper Bobby Guelich held off a hard-charging Dartmouth offensive unit for most of the day. But in the end, the Big Green had one opportunity too many.
Reserve Mike Ordonez took a pass from Matt Carroll and struck a low blast past Guelich just 3:27 into the first overtime period, giving the Big Green a 1-0 victory over the Tigers in the Ivy League opener for both teams Sunday afternoon at Chase Field.
Princeton (3-4-1), which was playing its third straight overtime game, saw its unbeaten streak end at three. Dartmouth (4-1-3), the 2004 Ivy League champion, hasn't lost a league game since the 2003 season. The Big Green also extended its unbeaten streak to six.
The Big Green outshot Princeton 22-7 for the game, including 12-2 in the first half, but Guelich made an astonishing 12 saves to help keep Dartmouth off the scoreboard. Princeton played without forward Adrian Melville for the second straight game and without starting defender Robbie Morgenroth for the third straight game.
Kyle McHugh and Zach Schwarz had shots on goal for Princeton, which had earned a tie with the Big Green in Princeton last season. Dartmouth goalie Rowan Anders made saves on both opportunities.
Princeton had just one corner kick opportunity, in the first half, while Dartmouth had six, including two in the short overtime period. Princeton plays at Brown Friday night before hosting Northwestern in a non-conference game at Lourie-Love Field Sunday.
