Neither the Princeton nor Harvard men's soccer team has played poorly in Ivy League play, but neither team has an Ivy League win or tie yet either. That's certain to change Saturday morning, when the teams meet at Harvard's Ohiri Field at 11 a.m. to begin a big day of Princeton-Harvard compeition in Cambridge.
Princeton and Harvard are searching not only for an Ivy League win but for a return to success in general. Both the Tigers (3-6-1, 0-2 Ivy) and the Crimson (4-6-1, 0-3 Ivy) have yet to earn a win in the month of October. Princeton has lost three times this month, while Harvard enters Saturday's game on a five-game losing streak.
The Tigers led 20th-ranked Seton Hall at halftime this past Tuesday, but the Pirates came back for a 3-1 victory. Ben Young scored his first goal of the season for Princeton, which broke a scoreless string of more than 230 minutes with that goal.
Harvard lost to Ivy League leader Brown last weekend by a 2-0 score at Ohiri Field. Charles Altchek has scored seven of the Crimson's 16 goals this season, but Harvard has been shut out in its last two games.
Princeton will get right back on the field 24 hours after the Harvard game, hosting Northwestern at Lourie-Love Field at 1 p.m. Sunday. That game was rescheduled from two weeks ago, when the game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions.
After men's soccer kicks off at 11, the Princeton and Harvard field hockey teams meet at noon at Jordan Field, with the Tigers clinching the league's automatic NCAA tournament berth if they win. The Princeton-Harvard football game at Harvard Stadium starts at 12:30, while the women's soccer game between the two schools follows the men's game at Ohiri Field at 2:00.
