STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Senior foil Jacqueline Leahy was the top Princeton finisher across all three weapons as the Tiger women's fencing team competed in individual events at the Penn State Garret Open on Saturday. Leahy, who finished third at the NCAA Championships last year in the foil, also took third Saturday.
Leahy led a trio of Tigers in the foil. Junior Sara Jew-Lim finished 10th while freshman Peri Rosenstein took 32nd in a field of 45.
Underclassmen took the top places among Orange and Black competitors in the other two weapons. Sophomore Cara DiGirolamo finished 12th in the saber while junior Elan DiMaio was 25th, rookies Anastasia Dubov and Sarah Pfau took 30th and 36th, respectively, and sophomore Allison Wuertz finished 38th in a field of 42.
In the epee, freshman Jasjit Bhinder had the second top-10 finish after Leahy as the rookie took ninth in her first collegiate event. A couple of NCAA finalists in past seasons also opened another season on Saturday as junior Erin McGarry placed 11th and senior Kira Hohensee finished 21st. Sophomore Jane Yum finished 35th and senior Rachel Zuraw placed 50th to round out the Princeton competitors. The Princeton men take part in the Garret Open on Sunday with competition starting at 8:30 a.m. After that, both teams are off until the first weekend in December when Princeton visits State College, Pa., once again for a team event against Penn State, Rutgers, NYU and North Carolina.
