Cambridge, Mass. - There's something about Harvard that brings out Emily Behncke's dramatic side.
Behncke scored with 13.6 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give Princeton a 2-1 win over Harvard in Ivy League women's soccer at Ohiri Field Saturday afternoon. Behncke also scored Princeton's first goal of the game.
The game-winning goal came one year after Behncke scored with 41 seconds left in regulation to force overtime with Harvard in a game the Tigers also won 2-1 in the second OT.
"It's great to be done with Harvard on a winning note," said Behncke, a senior. "It's been a tough game each of my four years."
Actually, it goes back before Behncke was at Princeton, as this year's game marked the fifth straight time the Tigers and Crimson have gone overtime. Princeton is 3-1-1 in those five games after having lost the eight meetings prior to that against Harvard.
"I thought we played really well," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "We had a few pretty good chances to put one in, and it's great that Emily came through. Every game against Harvard is a great one, and it's always good to get a win."
Princeton improved to 5-6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League, while Harvard is now 7-4-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the league. Princeton finishes its regular season with three Ivy games in an eight-day stretch beginning next Saturday against Cornell.
Behncke scored the first goal of the game when she redirected Maija Garnaas' ball with 6:41 left before halftime. Harvard tied the game 15 minutes into the second half when Erin Wylie pushed the ball through the middle and then set up Megan Merritt's low drive from the left side.
Princeton had several good chances in the second half and in the overtimes, but it appeared that the game was headed for at tie. The last chance started when the ball came into the box to Garnaas, who pushed it into the middle to Behncke. As was the case in last year's game, Behncke beat Harvard goalkeeper Katie Shields low on the left side, just inside the post. For Behncke, the two goals gave her nine on the season and 34 in her career. Garnaas now has four assists in the last two games.
Princeton outshot Harvard 20-14, including 6-2 in the overtimes. Shields made nine saves, while Emily Vogelzang made six for Princeton.
