Box Score
Each team had 14 shots. Each team scored a solid goal off a nicely-finished set play, with Princeton's coming early and Northwestern's coming late. The result was a 1-1 tie between the Tigers and Wildcats in a spirited non-conference men's soccer game played at Lourie-Love Field Sunday afternoon.
Jame Wunsch's first goal of the season for Princeton (3-6-3) was a header from the far post just 9:05 into the game, thanks to a beautiful corner kick from teammate Kyle McHugh. Gerardo Alvarez's goal for Northwestern (8-4-2) in the 76th minute was a left-footed strike from the top of the box, a free kick thanks to a Princeton foul a few seconds earlier.
Both teams had chances after that, particularly Northwestern in the minutes after their tying goal, but none found the net in the final 34 minutes.
"It seems like we've given up goals this year thanks to just one defensive miscue," said Princeton head coach Jim Barlow. "We did a nice job for most of the game against a very good team."
Indeed, the Tigers were the aggressors early on, despite playing an overtime game at Harvard just 24 hours prior to Sunday's game. After scoring early, Princeton nearly scored again in a flurry in the final minutes of the first half, but NU goalie Misha Rosenthal made saves on chances by Ted Wolfson and Robbie Morgenroth and the Tigers led 1-0 at half. Northwestern, which itself was playing the day after making a cross-country trip from California after a game Friday, then outshot the Tigers 8-4 in the second half. David Roth had a great chance just more than two minutes after Alvarez's tying goal, but Princeton goalie Bobby Guelich came off his line to make a save.
The Wildcats' Brad North had the best chance for either team in overtime, but his left-footed shot was wide right 1:55 into the first OT period.
Princeton, which saw its winless streak to six games with the tie, did have three shot attempts in the second overtime, but two were blocked and another by Alex Reison was saved by NU reserve goalie Will Briley.
The Tigers host Cornell Saturday afternoon (4 p.m.) at Lourie-Love Field.
