The Princeton men's soccer team continues a difficult beginning to its Ivy League schedule Friday night when the Tigers visit Brown for a 7 p.m. game at Stevenson Field.
The Tigers (3-4-1, 0-1 Ivy) opened their Ivy season last weekend with an overtime defeat at Dartmouth and will play three of their first four Ivy games on the road. They face a Brown (6-3-0, 1-0 Ivy) team Friday night that has won its last three games, including a 3-0 defeat Tuesday of a Boston College team that was nationally-ranked early in the year.
Princeton has gotten strong play recently from senior goalie Bobby Guelich, who made 20 saves in two games last week. His 12 saves against Dartmouth Sunday helped the Tigers send the game into overtime, while his eight saves against Rutgers five days before helped Princeton earn a tie with the Scarlet Knights.
Brown, Yale, Dartmouth and Cornell were the winners on the first weekend of Ivy play, leaving the Tigers among four teams looking to avoid a second loss that could prove to be costly. The Ivy champions in each of the last two seasons (Brown in 2003, Dartmouth in 2004) were unbeaten in league play.
Princeton is led on the scoreboard by senior Darren Spicer, the Ivy Player of the Week two weeks ago, who has four of the team's eight goals. Adrian Melville, who had three goals in Princeton's first two games this year, has missed each of the last two games with a hamstring injury.
Ben Brackett leads the Bears with five goals this season. Brown has outscored its opponents 18-6 through nine games.
Spicer's goal in the 79th minute lifted the Tigers to a 3-2 win over 21st-ranked Brown at Lourie-Love Field last October. Princeton came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to win that game.
