Riverside, Calif. - John Stover scored three goals, but it wasn't enough as the 12th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team fell 12-7 to No. 8 Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers also played Cal Baptist Saturday and posted an 8-4 win.
In the Long Beach State game, both Stover and Colgan led the Tigers. Chris Kelsch and Mike McKenna also scored in the loss. The game was even for the first quarter before the 49ers nabbed a one-goal lead at the half. LBSU took control of the game with three goals in the third quarter to have an 8-3 lead after three periods.
Princeton battled back to make the scored 8-6 in the final quarter, but could not get any closer as Long Beach State pulled away late. The Tigers played strong in the game, but 11 turnovers proved too much to overcome in the game. Gant Morgner stopped six shots.
"Overall it was a good day," said Princeton coach Luis Nicolao. "We made a few mistakes, but we played hard against a good team. We're looking forward to another good day tomorrow."
Earlier in the day Princeton picked up an 8-4 win at Cal Baptist. Four Tigers each scored two goals in the game, including Colgan and Stover. Scott Syverson made six saves for the win.
Princeton continues its trip to California tomorrow with games against No. 4 UCLA and No. 9 Loyola Marymount.
