Men's Water Polo Knocks Off No. 9 Loyola Marymount

Los Angeles, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team jumped out to an early lead and was in control all the way as the Tigers knocked off ninth-ranked Loyola Marymount 8-3 on Sunday morning at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center. Princeton fell to No. 4 UCLA later in the day.
Princeton improved to 12-6 overall with the win and loss. Last season Princeton fell to Loyola Marymount 6-5 in the third-place game of the NCAA Championship and dropped a 7-5 overtime decision to UCLA in the semifinals.
Against LMU, the Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with first-period goals from Eric Vreeland and John Stover. For Stover, it was his first of four goals in the game. Loyola Marymount answered to make the score 2-1 with a goal with 3:52 remaining in the first half, but Princeton scored on its next two possessions to pull ahead 4-1 at the break.
After LMU made the score 4-2, Princeton answered once again with two straight goals on their next two possessions to make it 6-2. Included in the period was a penalty-shot save by senior Gant Morgner who made a big save to preserve a four-goal lead. Morgner had nine saves on the day and LMU goalie Ian Elliott also had nine saves on the day.
Princeton added to two more goals in the fourth quarter to pull ahead to an 8-3 win.

In the second game, Princeton fell 14-6 to UCLA in a game played at the Canyon Recreation Center. Nicholas Seaver opened the scoring in the game, but the 1-0 lead was Princeton's last, as the Bruins scored twice in the first period, and four times in each of the next three. Seaver added a second goal in the game while Zach Beckmann added two goals, including one on a four-meter penalty shot. Scott Syverson made five saves in the game.
Upon returning from the west coast later tonight, Princeton hosts Bucknell on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
