The 2005 season will not end with an Ivy League title for the Princeton men's soccer team, but it sure has a chance to end on a high note if the Tigers can beat 25th-ranked Yale Saturday afternoon at Lourie-Love Field (4 p.m.).
A win would give the Tigers (6-7-3, 3-2-1 Ivy) a third-place tie with the Bulldogs (9-3-4, 4-1-1 Ivy) and four consecutive Ivy wins after an 0-2-1 start in league play. The Tigers could also play spoilers with a win, because Yale still has a chance to earn a share of the league title if it wins and Dartmouth and Brown play to a tie earlier in the day.
In any case, the game will be the last for Princeton's large eight-member senior class, who will be recognized prior to the game. The class features two of the top 12 goal scorers in program history in Darren Spicer and Adrian Melville, multi-year starters Neil Chaudhuri, Alex Reison and Ben Young, 2005 starting goalkeeper Bobby Guelich as well as defender Marc Dubois and forward Bolko Rokicki.
Princeton has defeated Cornell, Penn and Columbia and played to a tie with Harvard since opening the league season with defeats on the road at Dartmouth and Brown. The Big Green and Bears, both 5-1 in league play, play Saturday in Providence at 1 p.m. to decide the Ivy League championship. Yale gave itself a chance at a share of a league title by defeating previously-unbeaten Brown by a 2-1 score last Saturday. Liam Leonard's goal late in the first half broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game winner.
The Tigers' 1-0 win over Columbia Tuesday came thanks to a late goal by Spicer, his second late game-winner in as many games and his seventh goal of the season. Spicer took a pass from Ben Young and scored with 7:46 left on the clock.
Princeton has lost two straight to Yale, including a 4-2 defeat in New Haven to end the 2004 season. Yale's win over the Tigers in 2003 at Lourie-Love Field came by a 2-0 score.
