Darren Spicer, who led Princeton with seven goals in 2005 and finished with 26 career goals, and Jame Wunsch, a key part of a Princeton defense that allowed just 18 goals in 17 games, were each named to the All-Ivy men's soccer first team in voting announced Tuesday.
Spicer, a senior, was the team's leading scorer for the third straight season, scoring seven times and adding three assists for a team-high 17 points. Wunsch, a junior, helped the Tigers to four shutout wins and nine other games in which the opponent scored just once.
Earning second-team All-Ivy honors for the Tigers were senior goalkeeper Bobby Guelich, who played every minute of every game in 2005, and freshman Matt Care, who became a member of the starting lineup early in the season. Guelich led the Ivy League in saves (85) and saves per game (5.0) and had a 1.01 goals-against average. Care started 13 games in the midfield and was named Ivy Rookie of the Week after scoring a goal in a win over Cornell Oct. 29.
Princeton also had two players earn honorable-mention All-Ivy honors in senior midfielder Ben Young and sophomore defender Matt Kontos. Young came on strong at the end of the season, making key plays in wins over Penn and Columbia, while Kontos joined Wunsch and fellow senior Neil Chaudhuri in starting every game on defense.
Harvard's Charles Altcheck, a junior, was named the Ivy League Player of the Year. Brown freshman Scott Geppert earned Ivy Rookie of the Year honors. Yale's Alex Munns and Brown's Matt Britner were the only unanimous first-team All-Ivy selections. The Tigers finished 6-8-3 overall in 2005 and 3-3-1 in Ivy League play, good for fourth place in the league standings. Princeton finished 3-1-1 in its final five league games after beginning the year with losses on the road at Dartmouth and Brown.
