NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Princeton women's swimming & diving team nearly pulled off an amazing comeback, but an early hole proved too deep in a 155-131 loss at Rutgers on Sunday. The Tigers won the final five events of the day, including wins from Lisa Hamming and Brett Shiflett, but the host Scarlet Knights held on to give Princeton its first loss of the season.
Princeton raced well throughout the day but couldn't pull out a win until a solid team effort in the 500 free, when the Tigers finished first through fourth. As she did in the wins over Penn and Cornell the day before, Shiflett won the event in 4:56.86, followed by Ellen Gray, Monika Friedman and Catherine Wolpe.
That win ignited a five-event win streak that nearly pulled off the comeback effort. Justina DiFazio topped teammate Kelly Hannigan in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.69, and then Charlotte Jones edged teammate Katie Giarra with 267.22 points in the 3-meter diving competition. Lisa Hamming (2:06.99), Whitney Ryan (2:10.58) and Mary Cheffers (2:11.42) led the way in the 200 IM, and Princeton finished 1-2 in the 200 free relay to finish the meet.
Princeton will swim next at the Brown Invitational during the first weekend of December.
