HANOVER, N.H. - Eight different Princeton swimmers earned individual victories to lead the women's swimming and diving team to a 171-146 victory at Dartmouth in the Tigers' first meet in 2006. Princeton got off on the right foot with a win in the 200 medley relay be finishing 1-2-3 against the Big Green.
The team of Lisa Hamming, Kelly Hannigan, Meghan Capparell and Sobenna George won the 200 medley relay in 1:51.22, less than one second faster than the second-place time of 1:51.86 put forth by Sarah Schaffer, Whitney Ryan, Justina DiFazio and Chrissy Macaulay.
The first Princeton individual victory came from freshman Alexandra Wiley, who claimed the 100 fly in 1:00.04. Her win topped classmate Monika Friedman's second-place time of 1:00.62.
That victory opened a run of four straight wins for Princeton swimmers. Senior Kitsie Kerner topped Nikki Laffel (1:02.19) and Kristen Arey (1:02.56) with a time of 1:00.39 to win the 100 back. Hamming followed that up by taking the 100 breast in 1:08.77, and DiFazio claimed the 50 free in 25.04. DiFazio added a win in the 100 free later in the meet by finishing in 53.84, and Hannigan followed that up with a win in the 50 back (28.66). Hannigan topped Hamming (29.01) and Libby Engelmeier (30.45) in the event. Sarah Schaffer won the 50 breast in 31.30, beating junior Erica Pang (32.87), and Macaulay followed by topping George in a tight sprint in the 25 free (12.28 and 12.32). The final individual win came from Engelmeier, who won a 25 sprint for distance swimmers by coming in at 12.70.
Despite not winning either of the diving events, Princeton got solid performances from several younger divers, including freshman Peggy Kearns, who placed second in both the 1- and 3-meter competition. Sophomore Gayle Rudofsky and freshman Shelby Rudd placed third and fourth respectively in both competitions.
Princeton will compete in the annual H-Y-P competition next weekend, which begins Saturday night at 6:00 in Cambridge, Mass.
